Iranian president blames US-Israeli plot for recent unrest

(MENAFN) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says that recent unrest and “bitter events” in the country are part of a coordinated initiative by the United States and Israel, aimed at exploiting the difficult conditions faced by Iranians, according to reports.

In a meeting on Sunday with visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Tehran, Pezeshkian discussed the recent economic protests that escalated into violence. He said the unrest was fueled by individuals identified by Iran as “U.S. and Israeli-affiliated terrorists and rioters,” as stated in a report on his office’s website.

Pezeshkian criticized the United States and Israel for their “destabilizing and destructive” activities in West Asia, accusing them of attempting to sow division among Muslim countries.

He stressed that, despite political, economic, and media pressures designed to undermine security and stability in Iran and the broader region, Iran’s domestic policy focuses on “maintaining the unity and solidarity among all parties, ethnicities and religions.”

The president added that Iran seeks to promote development and strengthen relations with Islamic and neighboring states “through removing the walls of distrust and difference.” He also called for greater Muslim world unity to prevent foreign interference in the region.

Pezeshkian highlighted the longstanding ties between Iran and Iraq, describing the “deep emotional and heartfelt” bonds between the two nations as the foundation of their historical relationship and asserting that the “strong and historical” bilateral connection will continue.

Hussein noted that “Iraq and Iran have a deep history” and emphasized that Iraq closely monitors events in Iran. He said Iraq considers Iran’s security as inseparable from its own and the region’s and will not tolerate any attempts to harm it.

The protests, which began in late December, were initially triggered by the sharp depreciation of the rial and sweeping reforms to government subsidies. While they started peacefully, they gradually became violent, causing casualties and damage to public property.
