Netanyahu Urges Caution Over Egypt’s Military Expansion
The remarks came during a confidential session at the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, as reported by a daily newspaper.
During the meeting, Netanyahu highlighted that “the Egyptian army is building its strength, and this needs to be monitored,” citing sources who attended the discussion. He added, “We have relations with Egypt, but we must prevent an excessive buildup of military power,” emphasizing the need for vigilance despite the existing ties.
The statements were made amid a dialogue about the sensitivity of Israel’s relationship with Egypt, the sources noted.
The report also pointed out that, despite these strains, Israel and Egypt finalized a $35 billion natural gas agreement in December.
On December 17, Netanyahu announced that his administration had approved the gas deal with Egypt, calling it “the largest in Israel’s history.” He noted that the arrangement was valued at 112 billion shekels, approximately $34.75 billion.
Egypt and Israel originally signed a peace treaty in Washington on March 26, 1979, following the Camp David Accords of 1978. The treaty formally ended the state of war between the two nations, normalized diplomatic relations, and resulted in Israel’s complete withdrawal of military and civilian forces from the Sinai Peninsula, which was designated as a demilitarized zone under the agreement.
