UNRWA Head Says Israel Throws New Blow Against International Law
Philippe Lazzarini, who serves as commissioner-general of UNRWA, indicated that the latest measures could open the door to faster settlement growth and further weaken the position of Palestinians in the territory.
“The measures amount to a recipe for increased control, hopelessness and violence,” Lazzarini wrote late Tuesday on the US social media platform X.
He further cautioned that the policies could establish troubling precedents whose implications might extend beyond the region.
His comments followed a decision by Israel’s Security Cabinet on Sunday to adopt a series of steps designed to modify the legal and administrative structure governing the occupied West Bank, according to reports. These measures are intended to consolidate Israeli authority in the area.
As outlined in various reports, the approved actions include the repeal of legislation that had prohibited the sale of West Bank land to private Israeli citizens. Additional steps involve reopening access to previously sealed land registry records and transferring responsibility for construction permits in a settlement cluster near Hebron from a Palestinian local authority to Israel’s civil administration.
