US, Iran to Hold Second Round of Nuclear Talks in Geneva

(MENAFN) The United States and Iran are set to hold a second round of nuclear negotiations in Geneva next Tuesday, according to reports, amid increasing military tensions in the Gulf.

Officials cited by reports said the talks are intended to reach an agreement that could prevent further escalation. The U.S. delegation is expected to include President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and unofficial advisor Jared Kushner, along with White House envoy Steve Witkoff, while Iran will be represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, acting as mediator between the two sides, is also expected to participate.

Behind the scenes, a U.S. official noted that Witkoff relayed messages to Tehran via Oman earlier this week. Iranian state media reported that Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, confirmed receiving a document containing U.S. proposals following a meeting with Omani officials.

Trump has indicated a willingness to engage in diplomacy while simultaneously maintaining pressure through a substantial military buildup in the region. He told reporters, “either we will make a deal or we will have to do something very tough like last time,” apparently referencing U.S. airstrikes on Iran last June. He added that any agreement must ensure zero uranium enrichment inside Iran, noting that Tehran has yet to demonstrate meaningful progress on its nuclear program. Regarding regime change, Trump remarked that it “seems like that would be the best thing that could happen.”
