Iraq, Oman FMs Confer on Next Round of US-Iran Nuclear Negotiations
According to a statement shared on the social media platform X, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said his conversation with his Omani counterpart, Badr Albusaidi, reaffirmed their joint support for continued dialogue between the US and Iran and emphasized the importance of ensuring the success of negotiations “to spare the region the risks of escalation.”
The US and Iran are scheduled to resume talks in Geneva on Thursday, aiming to advance discussions toward a potential nuclear agreement amid rising regional tensions and concerns over the possibility of conflict.
The ministers also addressed the matter of submitting maritime maps to the United Nations, as previously done by Kuwait. Iraq highlighted its commitment to international law and UN resolutions and underscored the role of dialogue and negotiation “as a means to address issues in a way that preserves stability and the sovereignty of states.”
A dispute has arisen between Iraq and Kuwait after Baghdad submitted a map and geographic coordinates to the UN outlining areas it claims as Iraqi maritime territory. Kuwait argued that the submission encroaches on its own waters.
Historically, Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990 under then-President Saddam Hussein, prompting the 1991 Gulf War, during which a US-led coalition expelled Iraqi forces after seven months. Diplomatic relations between Baghdad and Kuwait were restored in 2003 following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s government.
Although the UN demarcated the land border after the invasion, certain maritime boundaries remain unresolved, leaving some delimitation issues to be negotiated directly between the two oil-producing nations.
