Iran's Qalibaf Puts Ball in Washington's Court After Talks Collapse

(MENAFN) Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf declared Sunday that the burden of building trust now rests squarely with the United States, as he pledged Tehran would pursue its national rights through a twin-track strategy combining diplomacy with a show of strength.

Qalibaf, who personally led Iran's delegation during Saturday's negotiations with Washington in Islamabad, took to US social media platform X to reveal that Tehran had entered the talks in good faith — but not without reservation.

"It is now for the United States to decide whether it can earn our trust," he said, signaling that Iran would press ahead with both diplomatic engagement and assertive measures to defend its interests.

He elaborated that Tehran approached the table with genuine goodwill yet remained guarded "due to the experiences of the two previous wars" — a candid acknowledgment of the deep mistrust underpinning the negotiations.

Qalibaf maintained that the Iranian side had tabled constructive, forward-looking proposals during the talks, but that the American delegation ultimately fell short of winning Tehran's confidence. He also extended praise to Pakistan for its pivotal role in bringing both parties to the negotiating table.

Deadlock in Islamabad
The remarks follow the conclusion of the latest round of US-Iran talks in Islamabad Saturday — negotiations brokered by Pakistan — which ended without a breakthrough despite multiple rounds of discussion and an exchange of competing proposals. Both delegations departed the Pakistani capital with core disagreements unresolved, though each acknowledged that sustained diplomatic engagement remained necessary.

The Islamabad talks formed part of a wider international push to permanently end the US-Israeli war on Iran, a conflict that erupted on Feb. 28 and has been temporarily halted under a fragile two-week ceasefire that Pakistan mediated earlier this week.
