Iran's Baqaei Calls Lack of Agreement with US "Natural" Amid Mistrust
In comments aired on Iranian state television, Baqaei said the discussions took place in an atmosphere shaped by suspicion and lack of confidence following what he described as a recent 40-day conflict. He argued that expectations for a quick breakthrough were unrealistic given the circumstances.
According to reports, he said the negotiations were conducted under conditions of “distrust and doubt,” adding that it was therefore unsurprising that no agreement was reached in one meeting.
He also noted that the agenda was complex, with issues such as the Strait of Hormuz and wider regional tensions making the discussions more difficult to resolve.
Baqaei reportedly stated that while some progress was made on certain topics, disagreements over “two or three key points” ultimately prevented a final deal. He did not specify whether additional rounds of talks were planned.
In a separate statement on social media platform X, he said discussions over the past 24 hours covered multiple issues, including the Strait of Hormuz, nuclear matters, sanctions relief, war reparations, and ending what he described as ongoing conflict in the region.
