Syria Welcomes Partial EU Sanctions Rollback Amid Political Transition
(MENAFN) Asaad al-Shaibani said Syria has welcomed a decision by the European Union to remove several Syrian government institutions from its sanctions list, describing the move as supportive of the country’s ongoing political transition.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, he said the decision includes the lifting of restrictions on a number of state bodies, including the interior and defense ministries.
He also noted that the EU had renewed sanctions against individuals linked to the former Syrian leadership and those accused of involvement in crimes against civilians, saying Damascus views this distinction as important in addressing past abuses while enabling institutional recovery.
Al-Shaibani said Syria is seeking expanded cooperation with European partners “in a way that serves the interests of our people,” emphasizing mutual respect and shared priorities, particularly reconstruction and stabilization.
The European Union confirmed that while certain institutions were removed from its sanctions list, broader restrictive measures targeting individuals and entities associated with the former government will remain in place following its latest annual review. The sanctions regime has been extended through June 2027.
The EU’s policy adjustment comes amid Syria’s ongoing political transition following the end of the long rule of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024 and the formation of a transitional administration in early 2025.
