Trump Urges Rail Safety Bill, Criticizes Biden Over Ohio Derailment
(MENAFN) Donald Trump called on Congress Tuesday to include railway safety legislation in a wider transportation package, renewing criticism of the previous administration over its handling of the 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said:
“I have long said that the horrific tragedy that beset East Palestine in 2023, along with Sleepy Joe Biden’s utterly incompetent response, must NEVER happen again,”
He urged Republican lawmakers to back the inclusion of the Railway Safety Act within the upcoming surface transportation reauthorization bill, which is expected to be reviewed by the Transportation Committee this week.
Trump added:
“We must not delay any further on this very important matter!”
The derailment in East Palestine occurred on Feb. 3, 2023, when a freight train operated by Norfolk Southern Railway carrying hazardous materials left the tracks, prompting evacuations and raising widespread concerns about possible toxic chemical exposure.
Trump also repeated accusations that the administration of Joe Biden and the Federal Emergency Management Agency were initially unwilling to provide federal assistance after the disaster until he announced plans to visit the affected community.
