Turkey’s FM to Attend NATO Talks in Sweden Ahead of Ankara Summit

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is scheduled to participate in a NATO foreign ministers gathering in the Swedish city of Helsingborg on May 21-22, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

The discussions are expected to center on preparations for the upcoming NATO summit that Türkiye will host in Ankara on July 7-8. Officials are also expected to review issues tied to alliance cohesion, transatlantic relations, defense industry expansion, ongoing assistance for Ukraine, and efforts to transform increased military spending into stronger operational capabilities.

According to reports, ministers will additionally exchange views on developments involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, including the possible consequences for Euro-Atlantic and wider international security.

Topics connected to NATO’s southern flank strategy and the latest security challenges affecting the Euro-Atlantic region — particularly the Russia-Ukraine war — are also expected to feature prominently during the talks.

The gathering will open on May 21 with an informal dinner session of the NATO-Ukraine Council attended by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

During the meeting, Fidan is expected to reiterate Türkiye’s backing for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, while also emphasizing Ankara’s diplomatic initiatives aimed at bringing an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
