Iran Blames Israel's Lebanon Strikes for Derailing US Nuclear Talks
"The main factor in the failure to reach an agreement in the region is the Zionist regime and the attacks on Lebanon, an attempt to prevent the improvement of the situation in the region," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told a news conference, according to a state broadcaster.
Baqaei did not stop at blaming Israel, extending culpability directly to Washington, arguing that American backing for Tel Aviv made the US equally accountable for the deadlock.
"The US is also responsible," he said, claiming that "every action" taken by Israel is "the responsibility of America, which supports it."
The Iranian spokesman pushed back against any notion that diplomatic engagement implied weakness or concession, stressing that negotiations should not be mistaken for a surrender of leverage. He also took aim at what he characterized as contradictory messaging from the opposing side.
"When the other side issues contradictory statements and conflicting media messages, it prolongs the negotiation process," Baqaei added.
The remarks come amid a broader regional crisis that has simmered since February, when US and Israeli forces launched coordinated strikes against Iran. Tehran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and American allies across the Gulf, while shutting down the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan took hold on April 8, yet follow-up negotiations in Islamabad collapsed without producing a durable accord. Both sides have since continued trading proposals and counterproposals in a bid to restart direct talks and bring the wider conflict to an end.
