Syria Extends Airspace Restrictions, Keeps Damascus Airport Closed

(MENAFN) Syria has prolonged the shutdown of its southern air corridors and maintained the suspension of operations at Damascus International Airport until Monday evening, as regional tensions continue to escalate.

According to a statement from the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, the decision was made following ongoing monitoring and evaluation of regional developments by the risk management committee. The authority said the measure aims to ensure “the highest levels of aviation safety and security in accordance with approved international standards.”

The agency added that operations at Damascus International Airport will remain suspended until 11 p.m. Monday local time (2000 GMT).

Meanwhile, Syria’s national carrier, Syrian Airlines, said it had redirected its flights to Aleppo Airport in the north of the country. The airline noted that the temporary closure of southern air corridors was introduced to safeguard passengers amid the current security conditions, according to Syrian state media reports.
