Iran Transfers 408 Afghan Prisoners to Serve Sentences Back Home

(MENAFN) At least 408 Afghan nationals held in Iranian prisons have been handed over to Afghanistan, where they will complete their remaining sentences, Afghan prison authorities confirmed Thursday.

The detainees crossed into Afghanistan late Wednesday through the Islam Qala border crossing in western Herat province, according to Mohammad Nasim Lalahand, spokesman for the Office of Prison Administration. The handover was characterized as a humanitarian and goodwill gesture by Iranian authorities.

Lalahand told media that the transfer was conducted in line with the prisoners' own expressed wish to return to their homeland.
